Equal Education has won against the Western Cape Education Department.

Judge Lester Nuku has ordered the WCED to place all unplaced learners in school in Metro East District (Khayelitsha, Gugulethu, Bonteheuwel, Delft) within 10 days from now.

Noncedo notes that the prioritisation of school infrastructure and current progress is a direct result of CSOs putting pressure on the government through advocacy, litigation and engagements. #FixOurSchools #SafeSchools

Noncedo discusses the process of movement building and intergrating the needs of children on the ground, with researchers who can analyse the relevant laws, policies, regulations compared to the lived realities
on the ground...

She notes that education equality buttresses on three conditions, specifically the intentional inclusion of infrastructure aspects in:
1. Budgeting and funding ;
2. Changes in law and policy;
3. Political will.

She notes further that we are seeing the biggest changes to education laws in RSA since 1994. She reiterates the need to ensure redress to systemic inequalities as opposed to ensuring that the privileged few merely retain their privilege.

She notes that there is an increased appetite from communities and schools to engage with organisations to ensure that schools are able to meet the needs of the learners they service.

We welcome Noncedo Madubedube, Equal Education Law Centre (EELC) who will discuss her experience traversing Grassroots Advocacy and Accountability. She discusses the interventions and support provided to children to advocate for their own rights at all levels.
