Detail from Romanesque north door arch . Described as 'shuttlecock' are these flies or bees? Bees have always had cultural significance since antiquity. Did the Roman love for bees persist through the Conquest?

11. Erie County Savings Bank, Buffalo (1893 - 1968)

A truly unique, Romanesque design that was the city's most beloved building. It was demolished in an 'urban renewal' project of the 1960s that saw a bland, modernist tower built instead.

Mont-Saint-Michel, France 🇫🇷

A UNESCO World Heritage Site which has its origins dating back to the 8th century. It's a blend of Romanesque and Gothic styles, rising dramatically from the tidal flats of the surrounding bay. Its crown jewel is the Abbey Church.

What curious winged creature is this? Whatever it is it looks pretty pleased with itself. A medieval owl perhaps?

11.5 million bricks were laid to build America’s Catholic Church. To achieve an original design that was “sunk in tradition yet distinctively American,” architects chose a Romanesque-Byzantine style for the National Shrine.
