How lucky I was to have today off and stumble across Colchester Archaeological Trust in Red Lion Walk today.

As much as I love my job - I do miss archaeology and being on site.
What a wholesome afternoon ☺️

For today's an early 4th century AD mosaic, discovered in the basilica of Aquileia, depicting the fight between a rooster and a turtle, commonly interpreted as the representation of light/good (rooster) and darkness/evil (turtle).

One of my favourite pieces of pottery - a fragment with an incised sketch of a big round human face. I hope this was made as a portrait of a real person - although I'm not sure they would have been flattered by it! Archaeology
