200+ pro-Israel counterprotestors are attacking the UCLA pro-Palestinian encampment. They started beating on one student and stomped another under a plywood board per Los Angeles Times Safi Nazzal on the scene. Where is UCLA security?
Our coverage yesterday on dueling rallies between supporters of Israel & Palestinians at UCLA. Both sides reported aggression but the rallies were largely peaceful. No arrests or suspensions. bit.ly/3UiWuSw Corinne Purtill Ian James Paige St. John Safi Nazzal
Had a great time talking with my Los Angeles Times colleague Judeh the Sheep Puppet (aka Safi Nazzal) about Disneyland’s wonderful decision to convert Autopia to electric cars — and why electric cars won’t solve all our problems, either. Video on Instagram: instagram.com/reel/C6NHUAypf…
Lots of rain, but not enough snow? Master puppeteer Safi Nazzal explains California’s “snow drought,” and the role played by fossil fueled climate change, for Los Angeles Times: m.youtube.com/shorts/0oIZYlf…
And let me just reiterate...De Los isn't gone. Fidel Martinez Martina Ibáñez-Baldor Jessica Perez Diana are still there and will do an amazing job of building on the legacy. Please still read De Los!!!!
My team at De Los was gutted. I can't find the words to express how much I feel for them and the rest of my Los Angeles Times colleagues. For many, working here was THE dream job; others, uprooted their lives. For all of us, it's a privilege to tell stories that reflect our communities
Breaking my silence on this site for one thing: If you were laid off at LA Times, here’s a list of journo job resources. DM me (same handle elsewhere) if you need leads on emergency grants for a colleague w/critical need (ex: imminent loss of housing). ❤️ lapressclub.org/job-boards-new…
I'll also miss my incredible colleague Marina Watanabe. I can attest a very fun person on slack. Thanks for teaching me about landlords, metro, and inspiring me to dig into local stories. We are losing a good one.
I'm eternally grateful to angie jaime for letting this puppeteer into the newsroom. Thank you for your leadership, for teaching me the ropes, and for giving Southern California a real gem of local journalism. LAT lost you, but journalism/young ppl writ large are lucky you exist
16 months without a contract.
Cleaving staff without a plan.
This isn't surgery. It's butchery.
I'll be joining my L.A. Times Guild 🦅 family and walking out tomorrow. I still believe in the L.A. Times. If you do too, see you in Grand Park tomorrow.
