Thanks for reposting, David Wengrow. This highlights the disconnect between folks like Hancock and modern archaeology, which is moving beyond simplistic categories for ‘civilization’ to examine the ingenuity and agility of human culture broadly, in all its diversity.

So if the Amarna Letters are “the origins of International Relations” then we have to define IR as a male-dominated club promoting upward flow of wealth at the expense of human freedoms and willing to use ruthless violence where diplomacy fails. I think there’s a case to be made?

As the last recipient of the Albertus Magnus Professorship, I am adding my voice to those who denounce the decision to withdraw this honour from Prof. Nancy Fraser, and have written accordingly to the Rector of the University of Cologne. Perhaps they can still change course.
