A species once thought lost for nearly 100 years – which produced just a single flower in living memory – has for the 1st time this year flowered with nearly 2000 feathery spikes at Askham Bog nature reserve, !😮🌿

One of the Whimbrel at the Wheldrake roost this year was ringed in April 2006. Undertaking an annual migration of 16,000 km this bird has now potentially clocked up around 300,000 km - in parts fuelled by a handful of fields around Hagg Bridge/Storwood - amazing! Yorkshire Wildlife Trust

With a few finishing touches yesterday, our new islands at Ripon City Wetlands are now ready for the breeding season. A Little Ringed Plover flew in almost immediately, which was a good sign!

A full survey of the site last night/this morning produced a total of 13 singing Spotted Crakes (likely to have been in for 4-5 days based on calling behaviour). Best listened for from Pool/Swantail Hide between 21:30-04:30, although one was also heard from the Wheldrake bridge.
