Weather (17 degrees and sunny 👏) finally gave me a chance for my 1st Chalk Cherries and Chairs Team Tracking the Impact WCBS survey today 👍 2 Green Hairstreaks the highlight. Got bit sidetracked by Grass Snake and Slow Worms under the reptile tins 🤫 and the amazing Fly Orchids too 👍

Breeding Bird Survey volunteers have also had the option to take part in the Wider Countryside Butterfly Survey (WCBS) on their squares since 2009. Around 300 Breeding Bird Surveys volunteers contribute to this survey each year on their squares.

New #BTOScience predicts abundance of butterflies in different urban landscapes.

Thanks to volunteer-collected data from WCBS, this research reveals future potential for better design of urban spaces for biodiversity.

Month 1 of WCBS core recording period is almost over. 500 visits to 425 sqs were submitted in July (down on 802 visits to 733 sqs in 2022). Thought it was going to rain but instead it stayed good for our WCBS transect in the corn fields of Northamptonshire - 326 butterflies recorded with 108 Gatekeeper, 54 Red Admirals and 97 Whites and 14 species in total

Day off work to submit a #ButterflyCount or two, and visited SuffolkWildlifeTrust Combs Wood on the way to walk my WCBS square. Always have a picker and bag in the car, thankfully!

One species of butterfly that is widespread in the southern half of the UK at the moment is the Red Admiral. If you survey a Breeding Bird Surveys square, you can do extra visits to your square to survey butterflies as part of WCBS. More information here: bto.org/our-science/pr…
