Sold a house and moved in Australia. They have none of this nonsense. You buy or sell your house and you know straight away for certain the day that you’re moving.
Why do we do this crap in the UK?

Kirstie Allsopp I agree. My aunt tried to exchange and complete on the same day, the sale fell through with the removal van on the way to the new place. They had to come back and unpack everything. Tears and costs expended.

Kirstie Allsopp When I worked in Conveyancing in late 70s/early 80s there was 28 days from exchange to completion which even in this electronic age I do not understand has gone. Was so less stressful for all concerned

Kirstie Allsopp Wish we took this advice, had everything packed up ready to go with the van - buyers money never showed up, that was 3 years ago, never ended up moving in the end, very nervous about the whole process.

Kirstie Allsopp This is the best advice, a week between exchange and completion can slash the stress levels of all parties significantly. As condition of Memo of Sales buyer or seller should put this in at the start start of the process for whole chain to agree.

Kirstie Allsopp Did an exchange & complete on the same day once, most stressful day of my life. Was around the start of the 2008 crash & I was convinced it would fall through until the last second. 😫
