Today the House considers the DC CRIMES Act. This bill completely ties our hands from taking steps to address crime in the District. Swift and certain consequences are essential to deterring crime, and persistent congressional interference contradicts that goal.

Alongside Mayor Bowser and Chairman Mendelson, I’m urging Congress to vote against the DC CRIMES Act, which would prevent the District from taking critical steps needed to improve public safety.

The DC CRIMES Act on the House floor tomorrow would remove DC's ability to increase or decrease criminal penalties.
 
Worse, it may be construed to prevent DC from creating any new crimes in the future.
 
Impairing DC's ability to deter crimes would almost certainly lead to more.
