Classical Egyptology claims that the sphinx was built in the time of Pharaoh Cheops or his son, about 2,500 years B.C.

A century and a half ago, a so-called 'Inventory Stella' was found at Giza, which indicated that Cheops had only commanded that the damaged statue be repaired.
