Geomagnetic activity will increase again today, however, as with last night, peak activity may not coincide with darkness.

There’ll also be much more cloud around tonight, with clear spells limited.

So, the chances of spotting the aurora borealis will be reduced somewhat.

Here’s a useful link for looking at current and forecast geomagnetic activity.

It’s the ‘aurora dashboard’ from NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center.

Oooh… Geomagnetic activity is picking up again!

Let’s see if it can persist beyond darkness and become as active as last night.🤞🏽

Eyes on the skies…

After being very active all day, during our daylight, geomagnetic activity has tapered off in recent hours.

Unless it picks up again, the aurora borealis is unlikely to be as strong as last night and confined mostly to the north of the UK.

**LATEST NOAA SPACE PREDICTION**

Further coronal mass ejections (CMEs) expected to arrive on Sunday.

This means another strong or extreme geomagnetic storm is likely.

Therefore, there may be another UK-wide showing of the aurora borealis on Sunday night - cloud permitting.

The latest NOAA Space Prediction forecast predicts a K-index of 7 until 1am, probably falling to 6 thereafter.

This would make the aurora borealis visible in similar areas and of an intensity akin to last night.

To give some context on last night’s intense geomagnetic activity…

It reached G5 extreme level, which is the first time this has happened since October 2003.

So, last night was a rare event - the first of its type in over two decades.

The aurora borealis is one of the fascinating topics covered in my children’s weather book, ‘Weather, Camera, Action!’

It’s full of information about weather and is aimed at 7-11 year olds, but grown ups will find it interesting too.

What a spectacular showing of the aurora borealis last night!

Thanks to all those who shared stunning pictures.

Geomagnetic activity will remain high through the weekend, so for some, there may be a repeat performance tonight.

I’ll post an update later on the prospects…

The geomagnetic storm activity is likely to persist through the weekend, so there may be another spectacular display tomorrow night too!

If you can’t see the aurora with your naked eye, try taking a long-exposure photograph looking north.

I just took this 10-second exposure from the edge of London. It’s definitely up there!
