Answer 1.
Let's say hottest temps on Earth are 120C and coldest are -80C. Average 20C.
Now say hottest are 30C and coldest are 10C. average 20C.
Target globally-averaged temperature is a rather stupid target to aim for 😉

NOAA researchers returned to 5 reefs in the Florida Keys where they'd planted staghorn & elkhorn coral - both classified 'threatened' - to see how they'd survived prolonged water temps in the 90s (30s C).
Most of them hadn’t.

The 2023 data are not surprising given the historical rise in both atmospheric CO2 and global temperature.
The 1959-2023 figures for atmospheric CO2 and temperature show increased correlation compared to 1959-2022.
It's now over 96%.

It paints a grim picture, particularly for poorer countries.
It flags issues such as inflation and food security, exacerbated by conflict and extreme weather events.
