The black holes are not visible, but each has a disk of material surrounding it, which is shown in red for the larger black hole and in blue for the smaller. Individually, each black hole distorts the light of its accretion disk. As they orbit, light from the more distant black hole’s accretion disk distorts above and below its companion in the foreground.
