Completely out of character, concerns are raised for the man's welfare in a race against time.

We are continuing the Women in Maritime celebrations today and have met up with Maritime Operations Officer Lucy.

Lucy shares her experiences in the operations room, where she is responsible for answering distress calls and responding to emergencies on the coast and at sea.

As part of International Day for Women in Maritime, coastguard rescue officers from across the UK have spoken up about their experiences, what the day means to them and why more women should consider joining.

Alan was alone in the Scottish Highlands when he broke his leg whilst hiking.

If he hadn't been carrying his emergency PLB-type device (Personal Locator Beacon), he wouldn't have been able to raise the alarm and call for help.

A new tool from Ordnance Survey which HM Coastguard helped to develop has now rolled out to other emergency services.

It will include the nicknames of more than 9,000 places and landmarks to help determine the location of incidents
